MCP server for enterprises

Connect Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot to Power BI, SharePoint and the ERP without opening the door to the whole organisation. Governance first: roles, audit and read versus write permissions.

What an MCP server means in an enterprise context

Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI assistant invoke tools and read context in a structured way. In the enterprise that means: the model does not browse folders blindly; it calls defined capabilities—query a Power BI dataset, read a SharePoint site, look up a ledger entry in the ERP—under explicit policies.

A local or private-environment MCP server keeps perimeter control: which tools exist, who may use them and what is logged.

Governance before connectors

The risk is not “having a chatbot”. The risk is giving a model write access to finance or repositories with no role, no trail and no scope limit. We design the MCP server as a control layer, not a technical shortcut.

  • Roles and scopes by team (finance, legal, operations)
  • Read vs write separation: querying a report does not imply changing the ERP
  • Call audit: who, which tool, which resource, when
  • Deploy on EU cloud, VPC or on-prem per data policy

Typical cases: Power BI, SharePoint and ERP

A well-scoped MCP server enables operational questions with real context: “what was Q3 margin in unit X?”, “summarise the contract in SharePoint”, “list invoices pending posting”. Each capability is exposed as a tool with a clear contract.

Power BI provides metrics; SharePoint, documents; the ERP, the system of record. The combination is only safe if the MCP server enforces limits and humans keep accountability on write actions.

How Magnum approaches it

We start from the data map and existing access policy. We define the MCP tool catalogue, roles and audit mode. The pilot usually covers one domain (for example financial reporting in Power BI) before expanding to controlled writes on specific processes.

If the pilot does not prove operational value with acceptable control, we do not widen the perimeter.
